PREMUDA

Getting Here

How to reach Premuda

Premuda is reached only by sea. Two public lines serve the island: a fast passenger catamaran from Zadar, and a car ferry that links Zadar (Gaženica) with Mali Lošinj by way of the neighbouring islands and calls at Premuda on the way. With your own boat you can come straight over.

Arriving by car: tolls & vignettes

You don't need a car on Premuda. Depending on where you set off, it's often easier to take the train or fly to Zadar and board the passenger ferry there. If you do drive, your route usually crosses Austria, Slovenia and Croatia, so it pays to know how each country handles tolls. The rule of thumb is the same everywhere: buy the vignette in advance from the official shop, and pay by card, contactless, at the toll stations.

  • The easiest approach is via Zadar. There is free parking around the harbour, and the passenger ferry takes you straight to the island from there.
  • With a car, take the car ferry (line 401) from Zadar (Gaženica terminal) or from Mali Lošinj. Coming from the north, you first cross to Cres on the shuttle ferry. Check the timetable in advance.
  • Leave a generous time buffer. Traffic on the way to the coast is hard to predict, and a missed ferry can cost you half a day.
  • Build in a day in Zadar. The old town, the Sea Organ and the konobas in the back streets are worth the stop before you head out to the island.

Austria

Buy the vignette in advance from the official ASFINAG shop. It's cheaper than the resellers and saves a stop at the border. For the route tolls, such as the Tauern or Karawanken tunnels, an online account with the digital toll is worth it: you register your number plate once, then the camera recognises the car and the barrier opens without stopping. Pay by card at the toll points; the cash lanes are usually the busiest.

  • ·Buy the vignette only from the official ASFINAG shop
  • ·Digital toll: open an online account, register your plate
  • ·Pay by card at toll points for shorter queues

Slovenia

Slovenia has dropped the windscreen sticker and uses an electronic e-vignette. You buy it in advance from the official DARS shop, where it is tied to your number plate, and then drive through the toll point without stopping. Be wary of unofficial resellers that add a steep markup.

  • ·Electronic e-vignette in advance from the official DARS shop
  • ·Tied to your number plate, no sticker
  • ·Watch out for unofficial third-party sites

Croatia

Croatia has no vignette; instead it charges by the distance you drive, paid at toll stations. An electronic toll box (ENC) is available, but for a single holiday trip it rarely pays for itself. The quickest way through is to pay contactless by card at the barrier, where the lanes are usually the emptiest.

  • ·Distance-based toll at the stations, no vignette needed
  • ·ENC toll box rarely worth it for one holiday trip
  • ·Pay contactless by card for the shortest wait

Only buy vignettes from the official providers linked above. Plenty of look-alike sites resell the same vignette with a surcharge.

Car ferry from Zadar or Mali Lošinj

Car ferry from Zadar or Mali Lošinj

Jadrolinija · line 401

The car ferry on line 401 links Zadar (Gaženica terminal) via Ist, Olib and Silba with Premuda and continues to Mali Lošinj, so you can board at either end. Coming from Istria or Rijeka, you reach Mali Lošinj across the island of Cres: first a short shuttle ferry to Cres (Brestova–Porozina or Valbiska–Merag), then over the bridge at Osor to Lošinj. If you're only bringing people and luggage, the catamaran is usually the better choice; on the island, scooters and boats get you further than a car.
